mail won't update

I got up this morning to no new emails. I have gmail accounts. I rebooted multiple times without success. I tried both wifi and cellular data connections without any success. I do have 2 step enabled and I deleted and added them back with newly generated app specific passwords. Once I do that it'l pull down my emails one time and then after that it will stop working again. All it will say is "Checking for mail...." at the bottom of the screen and then eventually it'll stop that and just show "Updated yesterday". If i totally close out Mail and then reopen it it will just sit there and say "Updated Yesterday". I'm at a loss as to what else to do. My iCloud email will gladly update with no problems, but I don't really use that so it's not really helpful.
