find my iphone

I would like to be able to anonymously observe the general location of employee Iphones. However, when I just logged into one users Find my Iphone Icould app, the phone instantly began sounding the sonar pings and I was outed...lol. Is there a way to ensure I can check this info without the phone holder knowing?
