Installing an OSX will not solve such a problem. Advise the exact model /year MBP that you have.

the macbook pro is 13" mid 2012 Mac o.s. xlion 10.75 MBP 91,00d3 . 4gb memory. As stated i tried to do a disc repair, did;nt work. Now every time i start computer a grey progressive bar appears on bottom. Instead of usual startup time of few minutes, the grey bar moves very slowly but eventually lets me log in. I fear i have hardrive problem . cant afford to get a rebuilt comp. is there anything i can try? Appreciate your help

You may need a new HDD. The simplest option is to have it checked out at an Apple store genius bar which will be done for free. If the HDD is found faulty, you can purchase and install a new one for less money than what Apple will charge.

What you might do is take out the HDD and install it in an enclosure. Connect it to the MBP via USB and boot the MBP using startup manager:

If the MBP starts up normally, the the HDD is functional but the SATA cable inside is faulty and should be replaced That is not an expensive repair. If the MBP does not start up, then that confirms that HDD is faulty.

I do not know what Apple will charge but it certainly will be more than what this link shows. In addition, they will charge you for installing the HDD. This is a representative sample from OWC and any 2.5" SATA HDD will be compatible with your MBP. Other vendors such as Amazon also sell HDDs.

You probably have a bad hard drive or a bad cable. Both can produce similar symptoms. Another possibility is that you might be loading some kernel extension or app at boot time that's causing problems, but on Lion the bar moving across the bottom means the drive and it's indexing is being checked, so I have to assume the problem is most likely drive related. Before doing anything else I would back up the drive if that's possible.

To understand this type of problem you might want to look at this link:

Hard Drive Problems

Look in the section on general problems.

Assuming the drive or cable is bad, to see what it takes to fix it, take a look at this site:

iFixit.com - iFixit (Official Site)

Assuming the hard drive is the culprit, I would recommend an Hitachi as a replacement:

Hard Drives | HGST Storage

They make a really good 7200 RPM 2.5" drive with a 32MB buffer and a lot of places are selling them for about $50 U.S..

Most of my post is assuming the drive or cable is going bad. After backing up you might want to try to boot into safe mode and see if the problem persists. If it doesn't then there's an app or kext file in there somewhere causing problems.

So as soon as you get all this sorted out and your MBP is running like it should, put an SSD in there.

I only deal with OWC and there are many reasons that I do

Never had a problem w/ anything I've ever bought from them in at least 8 years or so. They are Mac specialists so everything they sell works without any hassle.

I on an early 2011 MBP 13" right now.
