Ipad restore not working, unable to connect to Itunes

I have had this Ipad about a year, and it was given to be my my Mum;s ex. I finally decided to reset it and wipe all of the media off it. That brought me to the apple logo screen, where it ways "Connect to Itunes". I'm plugging it in and its not working, no matter what i do. I keep getting error messages. It's telling me I need to restore it from the settings screen, but now I can't even get to the settings screen without plugging it into Itunes. I'm stuck in a loop here. I also am unable to create a proper itunes because I'm at an inbetween age where I'm legally an adult, but NOT legally old enough to have a credit card. Go figure. What can I do?
