Q: USB 3.0 Hubs/Controller

Hi,

Just installed Windows 8.1 using Boot Camp Assistant.  While on the OS X Yosemite side, all my external drives are seen and are useable.  However, several of the same drives are not available when booted into Windows 8.1.  Tried to move some files using my thumb drive and a message popped up saying something like the USB controller had exceeded its capabilities.

Is this a known issue with 8.1?  Is there an update available that would fix this?  All the same drives worked fine on Windows XP.  Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

    Do you have the BC drivers installed? Check for any unknown devices in Device Manager.

    Hi,

    I am too new to all of this to be able to answer accurately I guess.  I am only guessing but I think I might need Boot Camp version 5.1.5640.  Currently I have version 5.1.3 but I also show that there are no updates available.  Am I able to install this update manually without messing up my Windows 8.1 Boot Camp installation?

    I am still getting the USB controller errors and some drives are not functioning in Windows.

    Thanks

    1. Did you upgrade  from WXP to W8.1 or was it a clean installation of W8.1?

    2. What year/model is your Mac? You can find BC drivers appropriate for your hardware at System requirements to install Windows on your Mac via Boot Camp - Apple Support. Download these to a USB.

    3. The version of BC Assistant is 5.1.3, but BC drivers are version 5.1.5640. The driver version is specific to your hardware as noted in 2.

    This is a clean install (which I could not have accomplished without your guidance) on a brand new iMac 27" Retina 5K machine.  I have downloaded 5.1.5640 and extracting it to a USB jump drive now.

    Can I safely apply this update in Windows without messing anything up?

    If you run setup.exe in the Bootcamp folder, it should update all drivers as necessary. It should give you an option to install or repair drivers. Please see

    Boot Camp: Install or repair Boot Camp drivers for reference.

    Not sure what is up now.  I thought I needed update version 5.1.5640 but when I tried to apply it I was told it was the wrong version for my machine.  So, I went through the identical process with version 5.1.5621 and I received the same response; wrong version.

    In both cases I cleaned the USB stick off completely so the update was the only item on it.

    What did I do wrong this time?

    For a iMac 5K, neither version is valid. The only method to get the correct BC drivers (5.1.5766) is by using BC Assistant and using Download Software option. Apple has disallowed manual download of this version, not sure why.

    So, does this mean I have to start from scratch?  I used a USB 3.0 thumb drive to install Windows.  Is that the issue?

    I have installed several programs to the Windows side already.  Is there a way to apply 5.1.5766 without experiencing problems?

    No. You are not reinstalling Windows. However, you will need to run BCA and choose only the Download Software option. It will download it to the USB3 flash drive. A USB2 flash drive should work better. Your USB will only have the BC Drivers on it. If you want, you should use a different USB than the one that you had used to install Windows, since the original USB already has the full Windows Installer.

    You are updating only the BC drivers. I assume that you have not installed any third-party Windows drivers, but only Windows applications.

    If the USB3 devices work properly on the OSX side, but do not work on the Windows side, this should put the BC drivers in place to allow you to test the Windows side for USB3 issues with your external drives.

    Well, I have done just that and downloaded the software to the USB3 flash drive.  I do not have a USB2 flash drive big enough at the moment.

    Do I apply this update from the OS X or from Windows?

    This is applied from the Windows side. You can run setup.exe from the Bootcamp folder, once you have the drive connected to Windows.

    Another dumb question:  It says it completed repairing the drivers successfully but is there somewhere I can see version 5.1.5766 to know that it actually worked?  I rebooted after the update and stuck my USB flash drive in a port and it gave me the same error that there was not enough power to support it.

    You can check the version in Bootcamp.xml. This is an example from my machine...

    <?xml version="1.0"?>

    <?xml-stylesheet type='text/xml' href='test.xsl'?>

    <!--Information on Boot Camp build-->

    <BuildInfo BuildNumber="5640" ProductName="Boot Camp">

            <MsiInfo>

                    <ProductManufacturer>Apple Inc.</ProductManufacturer>

                    <ProductVersion>5.1.5640</ProductVersion>

                    <ProductCode>{FA2B2C2A-EA41-495A-9308-60726125D562}</ProductCode>

    Do the same devices work properly on the OS X side? The OS X side in System Report -> USB has much better information.
