photostream duplicate filename

It appears that Photostream does not support duplicate (or near duplicate filenames). Over time, the image numbers and filenames have accumulated on my computer and duplicated. For example, I have IMG_0961.JPG.JPG taken last year and now IMG_0961.JPG (2).JPG which was just recently taken.

In the Photostream explorer, it does not recognize these as two different pictures and files. The thumbnail is correctly showing the (2) pciture, but when I double click it, it launches the original older picture file.

What is the best way to handle this?
