Superdrive on my Windows Netbook?

Does anyone know why the superdrive does not seem to also work with a Toshiba windows 7 netbook?

Surely it is just an external disc burner? It makes no sense to me. My mum wants me to do stuff to her iTunes but does not have a external drive so I thought I could do it this way, but apparently not!

I'm not totally great with computers but can do the basics. The netbook recognises the drive as "dvd rw drive" but the drive itself won't even accept a disc?

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated - especially with simple instructions!
