If you want to use your RAW images with native Mac applications, you need Yosemite to be able to install Digital Camera RAW Compatibility 6.01

Yosemite runs very well and brings support for iCloud. Do you need to stay with SnowLeopard because of PowerPC applications, that require the Rosetta environment? (Upgrading to 10.7 and above, don't forget Rosetta!: Apple Support Communities)

I've upgraded variously over time from Snow Leopard, Lion, Mountain Lion, and Mavericks. But the version you upgrade from isn't the issue. It's the condition of that version on your computer. If you upgrade a dysfunctional system, then you get an even more dysfunctional system.

Then, of course, you can eliminate the version upgrade by doing an Erase and Install. You can backup your current version before upgrading it so you can quickly restore it if you need to. You can even partition the hard drive and install the new version on an empty partition. These are options the keep you from losing the version you now have.
