iPhone won't stop wi-fi synching.

Yesterday I backed up my iPhone through iTunes using the USB connection to my Mac. Two things happened for the first time. One, the content bar graph at the bottom of the Summary screen on the Mac simply shows 36GB used as "Other" in yellow. No music, videos, etc. Second, my iPhone shows the sync icon going round and round even after I've disconnected from the Mac. "Sync with this iPhone over wi-fi" on the Summary page is not checked. I searched the iPhone for controls to turn off the constant attempt to sync, but no luck. I tried to again Sync and Backup my iPhone to the Mac, hoping to get back to normal, but no luck. Any ideas?
