softwareupdated process using ~500mb of memory... is this normal?

My mac has been running pretty slow lately and i'm trying to determine why.

I'm running the latest version of yosemite, i'm booted in safe mode and repaired & verified disk permissions, i've reset the SMC and PRAM and still nothing seems to be making it faster.

I've noticed that my memory pressure is constantly in the yellow, that shouldn't be much of an issue but it is just something i've noticed.

Also the kernel_task process and the softwareupdated process are both using around 500mb of memory, but kernel_task is using only 3% of the CPU while softwareupdated is using 0%

Is this an issue? Is there something else i'm missing? should i just upgrade my RAM?

Thanks

MacBook Pro (13-inch Late 2011), OS X Yosemite (10.10.2)

You need more memory from all you've reported.
