Why won't my songs import into the latest version of itunes?

ITunes says that I have the latest version of iTunes already downloaded. (12.1.1 or something like that) Anyway, I just downloaded some music from an app on my android phone and transferred it to the computer. I have an HP Pavilion. This is what I usually do to import songs onto my iPod. However, when I go to import the songs they open iTunes but are not played or added to my library. And they are set up to open with the iTunes program.The file info. on the songs says that they are a "MPEG Layer 3Audio (.mp3)" type file. So do I need to change that? I don't know how if I do need to change it. Once I get the songs into my library I can get them on my iPod so I just need to know how to import them. Someone please help with my problem. ℹ
