Get an adapter from Thunderbolt to whatever your laptop uses.
Sorry Kappy but ThunderBolt doesn't work that way.
In order to get the TB monitor to work with the laptop it must be plugged into a TB port on the laptop.
Since HP Elitebook 8440p does not have TB port, it will not work.

The simple rule with ThunderBolt adapters is that you connect the ThunderBolt end of the adapter to a ThunderBolt port on the computer. Once you have done that, you can that connect the other end to whatever it supports.
You might notice that even works for a TB cable. Connect the TB end to computer and then since the cable has another TB end at the other end you can then connect it another TB port.
