Hi, my iPhone 5 has serious water damage and cannot be repaired but I would like to restore its backup to another phone. But I cannot find the backup in iTunes as it only shows the connected phones. How can I find the 'unconnected' phones backups in itunes (since my iphone5 wont turn on). Also looked in the Library/mobilesyn/backup folder and the backups are for all my devices with no naming convention just large numbers.

You can see if you have a backup on computer iTunes:
iTunes > Preferences... (Windows: Edit > Preferences...) > Devices > your backup here.
Thanks ckuan. I looked here and could only see my iPhone 6 that is connected via WiFi. I can't turn on my old iphone5 to connect and then see it here
Connect iPhone to your computer iTunes with the dock cable and restore from your iPhone backup to the new iPhone.

thats exactly my problem, my old iphone 5 wont even switch on or charge (water damaged) so when i connect it, it makes no difference. I can only see my iPhone 6 in itunes that is connected via WiFi.
I was thinking you already have the iPhone backup on computer iTunes before it was damaged. If you don't, it's too late now.
Sorry, you misunderstood. I have taken a backup of the iphone5 in itunes on my mac book before it got faulty but apparently this will not show unless I connect the iphone5 and since it wont turn on now. i cant see it
No, the backup of the wet iPhone will show IF the phone you want to copy to has the same or later version of iOS on it. If it is not showing up the replacement phone has an older version of iOS.

You can see what's in it with any of the hundred or so iPhone Backup Extractor programs that you can find with a web search. One to start with (because it's free) is iScavenge.
