why is pages glitchy/or gets stuck?

I'm new to Pages, I've been using Word for Mac but it kept shutting down and I'd lose some of my data so I switched. But I noticed Pages is glitchy or seems to just get stuck. My cursor is there, it's flashing, but when I type, nothing appears. If I click on another open tab in Safari (Yosemite 10.10.2), and click back on Pages, it will enter a few of the letters I just typed but not all of them. Then Pages will stay this way until I restart my MacBook Air. Am I doing something wrong? This is as frustrating as losing stuff in Word 😟
