What problems are you having deleting items from your iTunes library ? You can't delete items from your purchase history, only from a device or computer's iTunes library
For the hiding, as you've discovered hiding does work, it's just that the 'x' on the top left corner is invisible.
If you want to leave feedback to Apple about the 'x' being hidden (these are user-to-user forums, you are not talking to iTunes Support nor Apple on here) : http://www.apple.com/feedback/itunesapp.html e.g. feedback type of 'other' or 'enhancement request'
