HD defrag

Anyone know of a good "disk doctor" utility that works with 10.4.8? After upgrading from 10.3.x, my Norton Disk Doctor doesn't work at all, and there is no version on the Symantec website that says it will run on 10.4.x I really need to get my HD defragmented - it's been tooo long and things are getttttiiiiiinnngg sssslllllooooowwwwerrrrrrr....

Thanks!

There is usually no need to "optimize" or defrag in X unless you are using your drive for intensive video edit or music.

As for Norton, use it for a coaster, or a frisbee but do let it near your Mac. It will hose your system for sure.

Here is a link to Uninstall Norton. Don't use the uninstaller on your Norton disk. (That uninstaller is not compatible with 10.4 Tiger)

This uninstaller works with Tiger and will find the 30 or so "invisibles" you will never find if you do it manually. However it may leave behind some files. Depending on which Norton you have installed.
Download and run Cocktail in "Interface" > "Finder" choose to see "invisibles". Or use OnyX.

Look for files like these on the top level of your hard drive:
/Norton FS Volume 2
/NAV Mac 800QS File
/Norton FS Data 808K
/Norton FS Volume
/Norton FS Index

Find those files drag them (not command-delete) to the trash and empty it.

If you need to defrag try TechToolPro 4.5

IMO the best and easiest way to defrag is to clone your system over to another drive then erase your drive, then clone it back. Clean as a whistle with no fragmentation and a lot safer than a utility stringing little beads back together.

Good luck.
