I looked at that portion of the manual and it talks about using the volume controls to start/stop video on page 86 but I don't see how to get sound while recording. Unless I am missing something? I recorded my grandson dancing and would have liked to get the music he was dancing to.

There isn't anything special that you need to do to get sound when recording a video. It is possible there is something wrong with your microphone. You can test this with this article:
