I have snow 10.6.6 tried to upgrade to 10.6.8 but the install failed on the final move, also can't seem to get safari 6. to load either

Safari 6 is only available with OS X Lion, so you will need to upgrade OS X in that case.
Have you tried downloading OS X 10.6.8 from the Apple website? Download it -> Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update v.1.1 Then, run the installer and see if it is installed.
That updater is an incremental one and requires 10.6.7. The best thing is to download the 'combo' updater which will update any version of 10.6 to 10.6.8:

As said you can't update Safari any higher than what comes with that; but the latest version of Firefox will run on Snow Leopard and should work with all websites.

Lion is available in the Online Apple Store ($19.99). Mountain Lion (10.8.x) is also available there at the same price (though it's reported to have been removed from sale in some countries so may well cease to be available generally) but there seems little point as the system requirements are the same for Yosemite (10.10.x) - which is free - unless you need to run specific software which will run on Mountain Lion only.

Yosemite is available from the Mac App Store (in Applications). Mountain Lion can be obtained the Online Apple Store. (Mavericks is no longer available.)

tried this had plenty of space but eror message said I needed 10.6.7 to download?
Try Roger's link to the combo update. Then you won't need 10.6.7.
