over 200,000 old back up files in trash that won't delete please advise

I was cleaning out old back up files and they are now stuck in my trash. The number is in excess of 200,000 files the process begins but then I get warnings. No matter what I choose, stop, continue or skip the process shuts down.

IMac, Mac OS X (10.6.6)

First of all, update your machine to 10.6.8 using this combo updater.

I suspect you've been trying to remove some of your Time Machine back ups. Not a good idea without doing the necessary research first. Read about ways to solve Trash problems.
