running windows virtual machine or programs from external ssd?

i know that it is possible to store windows virtual machine on external ssd. how fast would it be though? compared to average sata 2 7200 hdd?

also if windows is on eternal ssd and a program like visual studio is on external how would it run(compare to that sata 2 hdd again)?
