Accessing iTunes from a wireless external hard drive

I have an iPad air (WiFi only), and have just purchased a WD Wireless External Hard Drive so I can take movies with us when we are camping and there's no option of WiFi or cellular access.

Am I able to stream movies I've purchased from the iTunes Store to my iPad if they are stored on the external hard drive? Do I have to copy over my whole iTunes library?
