Clear message app red dot

Every once and a while I get the red dot on the messenger app in my docking station (15" MBP 2014), but when I open the app I have no new messages. How can I fix this?

MacBook Pro with Retina display, OS X Yosemite (10.10.2)

Take the following steps in order only if you're sure that there really are no unread messages.

1. Quit and relaunch Messages.

2. Sign out of all the messaging services you use and sign back in.

3. Log out or restart the computer.
