I have a MacBookPro and I believe its SAFARI 5, and 10.6.8. I saw Mr. Allan Jones seems to know a lot so I hope he will see this and can help me. I read one of his posts and he said to look for the Model Identifier and mine is showing "MacBookPro 5, 2". Please help me get my Yahoo Mail and other things back to what they should be - thank you!

In order to upgrade Safari, you must upgrade OS X.
Your MBP can be upgraded to Yosemite if it has over 2 GB of RAM, preferably 4 GB.
Open the Mac App Store and download Yosemite. If you don't want to upgrade all the way, choose About this Mac from the Apple menu, check if the computer has at least 2GB of RAM, and if it does, click here and order a download code for Lion 10.7. Alternatively, you can switch to a browser such as Firefox and stay on Snow Leopard.
Back up your data and check your applications for compatibility before upgrading. In particular, Mac OS X 10.7 and newer don't support PowerPC programs such as versions of Microsoft Office prior to 2008.

thanks for replying! 🙂 Do these kinds of upgrades cost anything? Also, does this mean I will now be on the "cloud"? I prefer to not be on the cloud. I have tried Firefox at my job and dont care for it, but this is good advice and maybe I should learn to like it. I assume one day I wont have a choice anymore though? I've never had a problem with my computer until now.
1. Yosemite is free. Lion and Mountain Lion aren't.
2. Not unless you separately set up iCloud.

I see Mountain Lion is $20. OK, thats no problem. If I do this (my memory says "8GB") then will it get me up to speed enough that when my mac does "software updates" on its own, it will be back to speed and I wont need to search for answers anymore? Thanks for your help.

I prefer to spend the money if I have to if that means less problems in the future. So Niel, your best recommendation is to get LION?

I am getting a little confused now.
I have 10.6.8. ....... I use CS5.5 Photoshop, InDesign 5.1 , Illus. 5.1, etc.
Get Yosemite unless you have software compatible with Lion or Mountain Lion but not it. If needed, click here and look your applications up.

OH, Ok - thank you 🙂 sorry, I'm a newbie and a little nervous but want to learn and do it right while understanding. 🙂
Seems LION might be good, but Photoshop CS5.1 is "conflicting data" and I use this the most. Yosemite seems to be less "helpful"
That link will not show me how it feels about iphoto when I type that in. I'm not sure what that means.... thanks again for your patience!
Photoshop CS 5.1 will work in Yosemite, but you may need to install a Java update first. Click here for more information.

All I see is that I need to update my browser, yet when I try, it says I have no updates.
