unwanted auto capitalization

I'm not sure The best place to post this query but, curiously, whenever I type "the" with the lowercase t, my Mac autocorrects to the uppercase "The". This happens in mail and numerous other apps. I did not input this change in the autocorrect list in keyboard-> text. Where else could this have been changed?
