Attaching thunderbolt display to waking macbook pro retina causes GPU panic

To produce the panic described below, I woke my MacBook Pro Retina (11,3), then attached power, then the thunderbolt cable from my Thunderbolt Display with a keyboard and mouse and ethernet attached.

This being just one of many ways Thunderbolt acts unreliably to provide USB and other services, I'm at wits end to troubleshoot this.

Looking at that panic log, it looks like your MacBook Pro's GPU is damaged (look at the "GPU Panic" message at the start of the log). I'd recommend you to make a backup of your files and take the Mac to an Apple Store or reseller to get the GPU replaced (for free if you have AppleCare).


(You only see this problem after connecting the Mac to the Apple Thunderbolt Display because it activates the NVIDIA GPU, which is the one that is failing9.
