Audio works in QuickTime but not in FCP

I have FCP 10.0.6 and Quicktime xxxx. I have a bunch of QT videos sent to me for editing. In QuickTime, it says the format is: Sorenson Video 3 Decompressor, 1920 x 1080, MPEG Layer 3, Stereo, 48 kHz. The audio and video play okay for some of these in QT. Other files won't open in QT and I've been using VLC to view them.

In FCP, when I import the files, they don't have any audio present. The video inspector shows no audio associated with it, just video.

Someone had recommended trying a new Event and I tried this, to no avail.

You may try converting these files in the Finder. Control-click, choose Services->Encode Selected Video Files, and in the settings choose Apple ProRes.

This should create a file with uncompressed audio.

This may or may not work; I'm currently in the process of trying it. But so far it's creating a file that is massive. The original QT file I'm trying it on is 3 GB; so far the one it's transcoding to is 30 GBs (and growing). So not sure if converting to ProRes will be feasible.

I just found out the videos were created using Sorenson Squeeze 4.5.7, which is kind of old (not sure how old) so it's possible that's part of the issue. I'm going to post a thread on Sorenson forum... (on second check, the Sorenson forum is dead so probably a waste of time)
