This may have nothing to do with the panic, but I noticed that the net.tunnelblick.tun kext is loaded. This is an indication that you are not using the latest version of Tunnelblick and/or you are not using the latest version of OpenVPN that Tunnelblick contains, or you are setting OpenVPN to specifically use the "tun" device. Recent (for the last year or so) versions of Tunnelblick use OS X's built-in "utun" device (available since OS X 10.6.8) instead of the add-on "tun" device.

If you are using an older version of Tunnelblick*, I urge you to update to the latest beta version, which includes important security updates and, depending on what old version you have, kext updates. You can use Tunnelbick's built-in updater (on the "Preferences" panel of the "VPN Details… window") or you can download it from Tunnelbick's Downloads page. If you download, be sure to install by double-clicking as directed – do not drag it to the Applications folder.

Before you do so, please note the current version you are using. If the update causes problems (unlikely), you can reinstall that old version (after downloading it from Tunnelblick's Security Risk Downloads page). To see what version of Tunnelblick you are using, click the "Info" panel at the top of Tunnelblick's "VPN Details… window".

* You will not be able to update Tunnelblick if you have a "Deployed" version – see the note about that on Tunnelbick's Downloads page.

Thank you for your reply. I just recently tried to search what Tunnelblick was, because I do have a VPN service but it is private internet access, but my computer underwent yet another kernel panic error, but this one was much worse in two ways: only one line of text loaded from the error, the rest of the square was green lines, and there was a beeping when I tried to turn it back on. After doing research last night before posting this, I saw that defective RAM is usually the cause of these things but my computer only showed one symptom of defective ram: a kernel panic error. I posted this hoping that it was a software issue that could be easily resolved with some reading, but now I'm sure that it is a hardware issue, likely RAM. If you have any additional information that might indicate that it is some other piece of hardware, I would appreciate your input. Thank you so much!

Boot into Safe Mode:

<http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1564>

This will not load any 3rd party additions. If TunnelBrick is causing your system to Panic, in Safe Mode it will not be loaded.

If your system continues to Panic, then it is more likely a hardware problem. If it does not panic anymore, then that would be a strong indication that your 3rd party additions are the cause. EtreCheck will list out all your 3rd party additions for you to investigate

<https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-6174>

If you suspect RAM, then you can use Rember (suggest multiple passes, enough to last overnight)

No.

"Safe Boot" won't cause Tunnelblick to not load the kext. Tunnelblick (apparently rebranded as "Private Internet Access") does not load the kext at boot. Tunnelblick loads and unloads the kext dynamically as needed, so you can have (for example) a computer with both Cisco AnyConnect (or whatever it's called) and Tunnelblick installed. "Safe Boot" won't have any affect on that. (And newer versions of Tunnelblick don't usually use the kext at all, as I said earlier.)

If the "Private Internet Access" program is old, that could very well be the problem; old kexts cause problems including kernel panics.

Or it could be a hardware problem, of course. Or something else entirely.
