itunes wiped the music off my ipod touch

When i plugged my ipod touch into my mac, itunes wiped all the music off my ipod, but it still shows under "my device" . How do I get the 7600 songs back on my ipod and keep this from happening again?

iPod touch, iOS 5.1.1
