I am planning to buy Apple TV. I have 2 MBPS WiFi at home. Is it sufficient. What is the minimum requirement. I am concerned that , after i buy, if Apple TV doesn't catch WiFi, then I will be disappointed.

My guess is that with a 2 MBPS connection, you will be disappointed with it for anything other than AirPlay or Home Sharing. That has little to do with the device itself; 2 MBPS is just a rather narrow pipeline for streaming content under any circumstances.

1080p HD movies require a recommended speed of 8 Mbps, 720p HD movies require a recommended speed of 6 Mbps, while SD movies require a recommended speed of 2.5 Mbps.

There has been no such announcement. Any website claiming such is based on pure speculation. That being said, the network requirement would be the same, so it would be best to upgrade your internet plan.
