How do I update Exchange password on my classic iPad?

I had to change the password on my Exchange email. Now, when I launch my classic, original iPad, I see a dialogue box asking me to update the Exchange password. But when I enter the new password, I just get a blank dialogue box again. And I'm blocked from launching any other application, including the settings. So I'm stuck. Any advice?
