How to export data from contacts

The only export possible from Contacts is to a VCard. However third-party utilities such as https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/export-address-book-convert/id402323447?mt=12 are available.

In contacts, select the contacts you want to export, copy

Switch to Numbers, Paste

If that does not work you may need to allow Numbers to access Contact information in System Preference> Security and Privacy. select the app "Contacts" on the left, then enable Numbers in the list of Apps on the right
