Q: How do you purge the pre-filled apple id in sign in box?

I had another user using my macbook air and he downloaded stuff from the app store under his apple id, and now the apple id sign in box comes with his id preloaded and I can not remove or change it.  How can I get rid of his id?

MacBook Air (13-inch Mid 2013), OS X Yosemite (10.10.2)

Log out of the App Store, then log in with your credentials.

It appears the problem is not that simple.  I have tried all I know.  There seems to be something diabolical happening that involves the remote controlled auto fill from apple. He may have been the first to do updates on this mac and now even though his user account is deleted it appears he has some admin priority.  I was always the admin so it is very strange.  This is the only remaining vestige of having that user account.

I meant to add that I have signed out of everything and signed back in several times and restarted.  I also added this device to the devices associated with my apple id.

Only the person who bought an app can update the app, as that licensed copy belongs to them.  You will need to delete the apps belonging to this other person, as they are only licensed for their use, and buy them yourself with your own Apple ID.

The apps that need updating are the apps that came with the computer such as pages, numbers, iphoto, etc. I am not trying to pull a fast one here.  These apps will not update because I cannot clear the apple id of an old user who was not the administrator.  He may have updated these apps and if that is what happened then is there a solution?  If I remove them I may not solve the auto fill problem and I wonder if they are free to download again.  I just deleted and then reloaded iphoto and that got around the problem for the time being for that app but I wonder if it will happen again when a new update is needed.  I can delete and re-install the programs like pages for about $60 and if that solves the problem I would chalk it up to a learning experience and move on.

The app store does leave a cache on your system - that may need to be deleted.

First though, if you have not shut down your system - try that - sleeping and/or restarting does not always clear memory the way shutting the power off does.   Use the Apple menu for the shutdown -- as apple has been changing power buttons to sleep/wake.

When that Mac was new someone needed to accept the iLife & iWork suites into an Apple ID. If this is a company owned Mac, unfortunately he claimed them for his own. He is now the only one who can update them.

That's an issue with companies that allow their employees to use their personal consumer Apple ID to set up a new Mac. Then the OS and the included iLife and iWork app suites become their personally licensed app copies, instead of belonging to the company. Companies should be creating company Apple IDs that the company controls to set up new Macs.

App Store products can only be updated by signing in to the store with the same Apple ID that was originally used to download them. You can't update anything, including your own purchases, as long as there are pending updates linked to the other ID.

If you can't sign in with the other ID, you have to delete all the apps that are linked to it. If you don't know which apps those are, see below.

    1. Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

    kMDItemAppStoreHasReceipt=1

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.

    2. In the Finder, press command-F to open a search window, or select

              File Find

from the menu bar. In the search window, select

              Search: This Mac

from the row of tokens below the toolbar. Below that is a popup menu of search criteria, initially showing Kind. From that menu, select

              Other...

A sheet will drop down. In that sheet, select

              Raw Query

as the criterion, then click OK or press return.

Now there will be a text box to the right of the menu of search criteria. That's where you enter the raw search query. Click in that box and paste the text you copied earlier by pressing command-V.

    3. The search window will now show all the App Store products that are installed. Compare those search results with the list of your purchases from the App Store. To see the complete list, you may need to unhide hidden purchases. If any apps were download from the App Store using other Apple ID accounts that you control, sign in to the store under each of those ID's and check the purchases.

    4. At least one of the apps in the Spotlight search results is not among your purchases in the App Store. Delete each such item by following the instructions in the Apple Support article linked above.

    5. Quit and relaunch the App Store.

If you find these instructions confusing, ask for an alternative method.
