I have a two year old iMac and recently receive an error that iPhoto requires an update before opening. The App store has an older version available but I have OS 10.9.5. The Mac App store doesn't offer anything that I have found so far.
Any clues?

What version of iPhoto do you have?
It's likely that if you have not upgraded your Operating System you do not require an upgrade, but rather it's a bogus message indicating library corruption.
I did upgrade my OS and read that this was no longer available. I went ahead and loaded the Pixelmater app and am having no issues accessing my pic's.

If you want to continue using iPhoto launch iPhoto with the Command + Option keys held down and repair the library's database file. That should let you use iPhoto again.
