How do I know if NVRAM reset?
I did the nvram reset on my Mac Pro 1.1 it did the chimes and the restart but my timezone, sound, etc. settings are all unchanged. Does that mean it didn't work?

No, but it never hurts to hold the keys down through a couple of more cycles.
NVRAM is only really reset from cold boot.
The 4-finger salute PRAM/NVRAM reset can sometimes have trouble with keyboards and other USB equipment.
Hold down and the second reboot cycle as done and do not let go of the keys, the sound should be LOUD and then you know it was reset.
And it will "look" for the boot drive the next time and you should go in and set the Startup Disk selection (even unselect and reselect).
