why does macbook pro macbook pro, Mac OS X (10.9.5) stopped reading discs?

I recently tried to archive music cd onto my hard drive and the removable drive

attempts to spin it up (you can hear it trying), after 3rd attempt, the removable

drive ejects the disc. Received no error messages. Checked hardware status

and drive appears in config list - again nothing to suggest a problem. Any

suggestions on how to further diagnose?
