iTunes pauses playing, spinning wheel often - diagnostic test run

Hi All

I have a late 2011 17" MacBook Pro which is kicking up a fuss. Very briefly the original 750GB drive was replaced a few weeks ago due the failure, which was in the optical bay (never had an optical drive fitted). A 12mm 1TB drive was in the HDD bay. The replacement drive is an 1TB HGST unit but due to the fact this machine won't take SATA 66 drives in the optical bay it was moved to the HDD bay and a 9.5mm 1TB Toshiba unit was fitted in the optical bay. No big deal. The HGST drive is dual boot 10.9.5 & Windows 8.1 Pro.

Quite often I find iTunes will pause playing for 5 seconds or so and I get the spinning wheel of death when switching between applications. Have seen the kernal_task up as high as 500%. The standard suite I may have open are Postbox, Firefox, Word, Excel, CC 2014 Photoshop, Dreamweaver, Aperture, Cinema 4D R16, FileMaker Pro, BBEdit and sometimes VMware Fusion. I figure 16GB RAM is enough RAM.

I found this post - Macbook Pro Running Slow and Overheating, High kernel_task CPU Usage - and ran the diagnostic with results pasted below.

I notice disk1s2: I/O error from the Toshiba drive. The S.M.A.R.T. status from the drive is fine and it always verifies OK with a check either from the Recovery partition or from an external drive with DiskWarrior or other tools. Backups are run every few days.

Is there anything else that looks dodgy?

Cheer, Paul

Thought I should do a follow-up on this issue...

The Toshiba 1TB drive turns out to be SATA III (despite been advertised as SATA II on most websites) so was the reason for the disk I/O errors so had to be moved to the hard drive bay. I found a firmware utility to change the interface speed of the HGST drive to SATA II so it could be used in the optical bay.

Also the AMD GPU failed so the logic board was replaced. Like having a new computer, no more iTunes pauses or heat related shutdowns in Windows.

Cheers, Paul
