Apr 2, 2015 8:58 AM in response to Norman Dukeby Demo,You could be waiting until the cows come home because Apple has never acknowledged that there is still an ongoing issue with Messages and FaceTime that I know of. I had the spinning wheel time zone issue myself. The first time it happened, I reset all settings and reset the iPad.
Settings>General>Reset>Reset all settings. I followed that with a reset by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the sMe time until the Apple logo appeared on the screen. No data is lost but all device settings have to be entered again.
That worked for me once, the second time it happened, that would not work, so I restored a backup that I already had from the day before. I backup every single day with iCloud and at least two or three times a week with iTunes. Restoring from the backup (which restores the settings) worked for me the second time it happened.
YMMV.

Apr 2, 2015 8:59 AM in response to Norman Dukeby jazcan,There is another thread where quite a few folks are having the same issue:
imessage and Facetime sign in activation error iPad ios8.1.2

Apr 2, 2015 9:24 AM in response to Norman Dukeby Demo,I Forgot about this until jazcan jogged my memory and I even had this bookmarked and still forgot about it. Vince0909 in the thread that is referenced above made this suggestion and it worked for a number of users.
You may still need to resolve the time zone issue as well.

Re: imessage and Facetime sign in activation error iPad ios8.1.2In my case it was not working for a week or two (iPad Air ios 8.1.3).
In setting under iMessage I entered a dummy login just to see what I would get ... a pop-up show up for password confirmation the password.
I canceled and I re-entered the correct username and password correctly and it works ... it's worth a try on your side

Apr 2, 2015 12:42 PM in response to Norman Dukeby 'shana, under Privacy, do you have location services on? It needs to be on to find your time zone. Plus, under that, select System Services and make sure Setting Time Zone is selected

Apr 2, 2015 3:52 PM in response to Norman Dukeby Demo,I realize that other people are still having this problem. Back when Apple released iOS 8.1.2 (I think) that was supposed to fix this, but it didn't for many people. Did you try Vince0909's trick that I posted above?

Apr 4, 2015 8:52 AM in response to Demoby Norman Duke,What's Vince0909's trick? So far I have restored from backup, turned off then on, selected airplane mode switched time zone to manual then back to auto, full re-set. All of my devices work except for my wife iPad 3 (same Apple ID as we use them for business). No help from Apple. They want support money to resolve their problem. Very frustrating!
