iPad problem

HAving a new problem with first gen iPad. Until recently I've been using iMessage without problems. Now it asks me for apple ID, BUT WON'T RECOGNIZE IT. Tells me I cannot sign in, to ck web connection, but connection is fine. The last message I sent shows up, but I immediately get sign in MSG and can't get past it.
