Q: Im trying to set up messages in Yosemite 10.10.2 on Mac

I am running OS X Yosemite 10.10.2 on my macbook. When I try to setup Messages I go to preferences>accounts. However, there is no "message" icon or

an "alert" horn" in the top of the box? Also, I there is no place to sign in with my Apple ID?

Does anyone know what's going on?

MacBook, Mac OS X (10.5.8)

    Hi,

In Messages using the Messages Menu > Preferences  you should have three icons across the top only:-

    General

    Accounts

    Video

In the Accounts you should have a list on the Left with at least two "accounts" neither of which can be deleted.

The iMessages one and the Bonjour one

This Mavericks pic still shows the "Viewing" item in the icons across the top.

I also have several other accounts (AIM, Jabber/Google and Yahoo active as well).

If you have others they may have been added by System Preferences > Internet Accounts

If there is nothing in the list on the Left the apps is not installed properly  and you will have to Reinstall the OS as it only comes as part of that.

    Hi,

You open Message app on your Mac right, and you look in the preferences/accounts and not see and iCloud account, perhaps because you need to ad yours.

Lower down in accounts there are a Plus and a Minus symbol, you ad your Apple ID/icloud ID there after clicking the Plus symbol.

    Thats the first part.

    let me know.

    Ross/.

    HI,

    I was very clear...

In the Accounts you should have a list on the Left with at least two "accounts" neither of which can be deleted.

The iMessages one and the Bonjour one

Whether the Bonjour one is enabled or not it is always there and cannot be deleted (using in the Minus icon)

The same is true of the iMessages account.  Something always shows Whether you have  added your Apple ID  to the settings or Not.

You can remove the Apple ID (Sign Out).

You can untick the "Enable this Account" box but again you can not highlight it and use the Minus Key.

With the Bonjour Account it has been like this since iChat 1

The iMessages one since Message 7 in Mountain Lion.

Note the minus icon button is greyed out and unusable.
