I exported a large movie file to my lacie 500 gb external drive and couldn't find it, so I did it again, and still couldn't find it. now I notice that my computer hard drive is suddenly 7 GB more full than it was before, but I cannot find the exported files anywhere on the computer hard drive either. so now I have only 2 GB space left.....help! thanks

Hi,
several questions:
when you say "exported", that means that the file was originally on your computer and you moved it to your external hard drive or do you mean "imported" from a source external to your computer/hard drive?
If you meant "imported", where are you importing it from? What application is being used? Are you downloading onto your computer directly?
If you are using Safari, check out in the pull-down menu in the uper left corner of your screen Safari/Preferences/Save downloaded files to
Has the file an extension? If so, can you use Spotlight?

it was a quicktime movie being exported from a final cut pro project, which also should appear on the lacie disk, but does not, even though it definitely exists and I can work on it, so all is taking place within my computer and the lacie disk. I need to export the movie before I can put it into an idvd project.

I also asked about this on the final cut discussion group, but I think maybe it is a finder problem since I can't find the file

thanks for your help

this solved the problem

Disconnect the external drive from your computer and then choose Go to Folder from the Finder's Go menu. Enter /Volumes/ as the folder's path and then look for items in this folder which the Finder reports as being a file or folder as opposed to an alias. If you find one, move it to the desktop if you need or want anything in it, and to the Trash if you don't. When the Volumes folder contains only aliases, reconnect the external drive and move the music to it.
