imac 333 cd won't read

I just bought this computer for my daughter, but it won't read any discs. It just keeps asking me if I want to initialize them and then says they are locked. I know these programs work on anohter 333. I have never had a mac before and am lost.

Hello,

The discs I am trying to read are cd rom games and talking books which I borrowed from the library. I know they work on another iMac 333, which I tested them on myself. But on this one it says not able to read, do I want to initalize, then says unable to do so because they are locked. I have updated the firmware and os 9.1. The driver is in the extension manager, I have rebooted several times, including holding down the eprom clear keys upon start up.

thanks for any help

Hi, Isabella -

It will do no good to try to initialize the disks, per the offer in the message from the OS. To initialize a disk means to erase and reformat it. Since a CD of the type you describe can not be erased, nothing will happen when you try to initialize them - nor should it.

Make sure the File Exchange control panel is active (checkmarked) in Extensions Manager.

Make sure the following items are physically present in the Extensions folder in System Folder (not all of them will show up in Extensions Manager, hence the need to make a physical check) -

Apple Audio Extension

Apple CD/DVD Driver

Apple Photo Access

Audio CD Access

Foreign File Access

ISO 9660 File Access

UDF Volume Access

If you have Toast installed on that machine, try disabling Toast's CD Reader extension.

Have you tried one of the original CDs that came with the machine, or a retail OS 9 Install CD, to confirm the drive is working at all?

If no CD at all is being read, you might try using an audio CD cleaning disk in the drive - if the lenses in the drive get too dusty or dirty, a disk can not be read.
