Finder problems

17" MacBook Pro - running Mac OS 10.6.8

Cursor had disapppeared - closed the lid and waited for the computer to go to sleep.

Opened the computer and the cursor had come back.

This has often worked before but this time although I had a cursor I could move around, clicking on things did not work.

Shut the computer down.

Restarted the computer:

The only thing on the desktop is the Activity Monitor

The only things in the menu bar

Apple on the left

Dropbox, Magic Menu, Mous[ose, and CrashPlan on the right

The items on the dropdown menus for the above all worked OK

The only applications that I can run are those related to items in the APPLE > Recent Items and they all work OK

Command C for copy does not work.

Switching to a different User and on that user everything is OK.

Shut down using power off.

Restarted the computer and same as before.

For what it is worth:

Several days ago I went to run a video and got the message that I needed a newer verson of Java and I clicked OK to download it.

After the first part of it I was asked if I wanted to install MacKeeper and I clicked on skip

Afterward I found that some settings (new screen, default download disk) had changed for Safari & FireFox, I corrected them.

Also found that some "installer" was back that eats up memory space and CPU time but does not seem to do anything. Using Application Monitor a normal

Stop will stop it. I had this proplem several months ago and had taken care of it at that time. Will have to get rid of it again.

Ran Disk Utility Verify on all disks and no problems were found

Sophos had quit running some weeks ago and searching the Internet I found that others had the same porblem, but no solution.

Uninstalling and reinstalling Sophos got it going OK

Did a full disk scan and it found no problems.

I am not certain if I did any "good" restarts after those last two.

Sounds like you have Adware installed. Possibly Genieo (and evil bit of software)

Please post the output from EtreCheck

<https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-6174>

Also you might try AdwareMedic

<http://www.adwaremedic.com/index.php>

And I'll tell you right up front, the long term forum contributors do not like anti-malware products. Mostly because they interfere with Macs, cause performance problems, and are a frequent source of kernel panics. I suggest you uninstall Sophos, and any other anti-malware, Mac cleaners, and memory cleaners you may have installed on your Mac.

Thank you Bob.

I cannot run EtreCheck because:

I do not have access to the disks as they are not on the desktop.

There is no Dock to select it from.

And without the dock I can not call up Finder in order to get the Finder menu bar

I downloaded EtreCheck again in hopes that from the Download screen I could get to its location. No luck.

I ran EtreCheck earlier in the week but too long ago for it to be in the Recent Items listing.

From the Recent Items list I was able to run Mail, Safari, and FireFox.

And from doccuments in the Recent ltems list there were some doccuments from which I was able to get Microsoft Word and TextEdit up and running.

Those applcations run fine and their menu bar functions all seem to work except although Copy and Cut appear to work, Paste does not.

Any suggestions on how I can get other applications running, most noteabllly Finder?

Apr 5, 2015 12:43 AM in response to Lowell Ray Anderson

That video which left you the message was probably the culprit, especially if the offer to get MacKeeper followed soon afterwards.

And a small addition to Bob's comments. Another 'anti virus' aid that many people have, but is known to cause problems, is Avast. Remove that if you have it.

You need to remove every vestige of these beasts; I find that 'Find any File' comes in very useful.

Apr 6, 2015 2:26 PM in response to Lowell Ray Anderson

Command-Tab will allow you to display the running apps. You can either continue to hold the command key and keep tapping tab to cycle through the apps till you get to Finder, or you can use the Trackpad, or you can use the Arrow keys. Once you have the Finder as the active app, you can use Finder -> Go -> Downloads to get to the Downloads folder and access EtreCheck.

Or in the Finder, there should be a download arrow on the far right.

User uploaded file

If you click on that, you should see the last items you downloaded. There will be a magnifying glass to the right of the EtreCheck download. If you click on the magnifying glass, it will take you to the Downloads folder.

If you continue to have problems accessing the Dock and Finder, you might want to consider booting into Safe Mode to see if that allows you to get some control so you can clean things up (Safe Mode is only a short term thing until you remove undesirable elements).

Apr 6, 2015 2:46 PM in response to BobHarris

Command-Tab did not work.

Starting in Safe Mode did get me to where I could get to and delete the adware items.

So far everything seems to now be running fine.

I have been running Sophos for years with no problems and it did caught some bad items over that time.

EtreCheck results follow, run after another shutdown and start up

Problem description:

The memory hog Installer T still comes up on startup.

Also getting “rapport cannot be opened because of a problem” message comes up on startup.

Google says this is part of Genieo (a very bad bit of adware). Try AdwareMedic

<http://www.adwaremedic.com/index.php>

If you have not already.

Otherwise try manual removal

Finder -> Go -> Go to Folder -> ~/Library/LaunchAgents (~ is a tilda characger, typically found on the upper left side of the keyboard).

Apr 6, 2015 9:37 PM in response to BobHarris

Thank you Bob,

I missed those on my manual removal of adware, MAC OS 10.6.8. That took care of the InstallT coming up.

Got rid of the “rapport cannot be opened because of a problem” message comes up on startup bu somg tje EtreCheck [Click for support] and uninstalling rapport.

EtreCheck is great.

You may be happy right now, but keep an eye on:

Sophos (which is still listed)

Crashplan (appears to be some sort of backup software? Why not use OS native Time machine?)

And, the extensive list of login items you have - any/all will slow down any startup. unless there is an absolute need to have something launch immediately, they can be launched when you need them - remove them from your login items.

Crashplan (appears to be some sort of backup software? Why not use OS native Time machine?)

Time Machine is a local backup.

CrashPlan is a network backup and has 2 modes. Although it can be used to backup on the same system, but that is not its intended purpose.

A good backup policy is 3-2-1

3 copies of your data (the original being 1 copy)

2 different backup formats (avoids bugs in one backup utility corrupting all your backups)

1 off-sight backup (avoids natural disasters (fire, flood, earthquake, etc...) and theft)

The free CrashPlan mode allows you to securely backup over the net to another computer (one of you own, or a family member, friend, etc...) Over the net could be your local LAN or the Internet, and CrashPlan does a good job of navigating home routers. For example, I backup all the household laptops to a Mac mini server with lots of external storage, AND I backup my Mom's iMac, 300 miles away, to the Mac mini. There are other people that arrange to backup each other using CrashPlan. Friend A backups to Friend B, and B backups to A.

The paid service allows you to securely backup to CrashPlan backup servers.

CrashPlan is cross platform (Mac, Windows, Unix), so the destination does not need to be a Mac.

NOTE: I am just a user, and derive no benefit for what I've said. I just like the product and it has worked very well for me, especially when I'm on vacation and could not normally backup my laptop.
