what are the symptoms of a bad charging block for an iPhone? My phone will give a message stating accessory may not be recognize? It is almost dead. Is this a bad charging block or cord, or does my phone have a problem?

Since iOS 8, the iPhone software will also check the accessory that is used to charge the device. Some USB cables and adapters may not work anymore after that, because they don't match the tech specs Apple set up for 3rd party accessory.
Did you try to use the adapter and USB cable that came with the phone?
Also make sure that the docking port is free of any debris or lint and that no pints are broken or bent.
