A good thing to maybe do is check your sound. Make sure speakers are on and all that. That's pretty basic. Another thing is in iMovie, go to View (on the top bar), then go down to "Show clip volume levels" and that might be the solution. If not, then it's gotta be the volume control on iMovie. There's a little volume control on the left of "Clips." You do NOT need Quicktime Pro to listen to sound.

welcome zulu warrior to the  boards...

iMovie is a consumer video edit app meant to work with firewire connected miniDV/D8 camcorders

any other "formats"/codecs need conversion, very little supported by iM itself.. in your case, you need a 3rd party tool, free for use, Streamclip.

after conversion into "dv/dv stream", your imports will have audio+video...

background:
your camera records into mpeg format - that is for playback only... so, QT plays your files, but to convert it, QT needs seperate streams of audio+video.. which isn't with that format, mpegs "muxx" both media... Streamclip demuxxes and converts...
besides: you will realize a loss in pic quality - mpegs are a delivery format, not meant for further processing...

I am having the same problem - apparently if the film/clip you are trying to import has the audio recorded in MPEG-1 Muxed format - this means that no audio will be exported to IMovie - I managed to find this from the Help screens but unfortunately it doesn't tell you how to fix it!! If I find out anything else I will let you know.
Incidentally, it is worth upgrading to Quicktime pro as if you're not bothered about burning films once downloaded, you can watch in full screen etc but as I mentioned before until the sound thing is sorted out you can't burn to DVD.

Hi again, I just found something else useful on the forum - try going to www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/video/mpegstreamclip/html - this free bit of software will convert the file type you need so should stop the problem with loss of sound - however the conversion process seems to take rather a long time as it re-encodes the clip. Hopefully this will solve the problem.
