ping responds with "Redirect host"

Can anyone help explain what is happening when I do a ping 192.168.254.239 and get following:

64 bytes from 192.168.254.239: icmp_seq=134 ttl=64 time=4.446 ms (DUP!)
36 bytes from 192.168.254.81: Redirect Host(New addr: 192.168.254.239)
Vr HL TOS Len ID Flg off TTL Pro cks Src Dst

64 bytes from 192.168.254.239: icmp_seq=135 ttl=64 time=0.227 ms

What concerns me is that my DNS is 192.168.254.236, not x.x.x.81. This is happening when network services started isbehaving - printers not working, servers timing out and internet access unreliable.

The x.x.x.239 device is OSXS 10.4.6 on Xserve.

I am using OSX 10.4.8 on MBP.

Mac OS X (10.4.8)

You have bigger problems than the redirect.

The first line in your post includes 'DUP'. This indicates that this is a duplicate reply. That usually happens as a result of two machines on the network using the same IP address.

You should check your network for any other device that may be using the same IP address. Also check whatever host 192.168.254.81 is. That's the device that's sending you a redirect, so that would be the machine to focus on.
