Fan Noise and/or Hard Drive Spinning

I'm noticing more fan noise/hard drive noise (I have trouble distinguishing, but if I had to guess I think it is the fan) than I consider to be normal. I want to know if my concept of "normal" is, well, normal.

The noise falls into two categories:

1) Working noise - When the computer is doing something like downloading music from the iTunes store or transfering files to my external HD (or when I have a lot of apps open) it really ramps up and sounds like a plane taking off.

2) Noise at the end of a long day of use - After prolonged periods of normal use (internet surfing, listening to music, ichatting) I hear quieter yet audible noise, like the machine is under strain.

Is this normal? Any thoughts as to whether it is the HD or the fan? Thanks.

the fan is probably the second loudest moving part in the macbook, the optical drive being the first. the HD is not really loud at all. all youd really hear from it, if anything, would be faint whirring from the hard disk and very faint mechanical clinks as files are accessed off of it. if you have a hard-drive based ipod, put it up to your ear, thats pretty much the same sound your hard drive should make. the sound you seem to be describing (plane taking off) is the fan. most of the noise is actually the air its blowing, rather than the actual sound of the motor.

You can always check your activity monitor to see exactly what's accountable for the fan kicking in all the time. Multiple apps that eat up lots of memory can cause the CPU to top out at 2GHz and drive the temp up, thus causing the fans to intervene. But too much fan noise is a bit subjective, as some claim that the noise is completely tolerable, while others cant stand the very idea of it. my CPU gets maxed when i transfer mutli-gig files to my external HD or when i transfer movies to my ipod. its no big deal, since the computer still performs well while doing this (smooth graphics for example) and never gets really hot.
