Q: How to Auto Capitalisation in pages 5 and mail 8 - OS X 10.10.2

I have a Macbook Pro and using Pages 5 and Mail 8 with OS X 10.10.2. I am new to using Mac and OS X and want to set Auto Capitalisation for; start of new sentences, new lines/paragraphs, "i" etc. Is this possible? Thank you.

The auto-capitalization feature that you seek is not supported in Pages v5 or Apple Mail. It is not a configurable setting in OS X Yosemite either. Like the rest of us, use the shift key.

To get a lower-case "i" to promote to its capital counterpart, you would configure a "ii" in the Replace column and a single capital "I " in the With column of System Preferences ▸ Keyboard ▸ Text. To get the auto-capitalization of "i" when typed, you must first enable your application's Edit > Substitutions > Text Replacement menu item. Quotes here are not to be included in the text replacement fields or typed by you.

Thank you VikingOSX - appreciate the clarification and quick response. I will use the shift key. am I right in thinking this is a feature in iOS? As a new user of a Mac can you recommend forums etc., there is a lot to learn after switching from Windows.

The IOS Pages 2.2.2 that I am using on IOS 7 does not provide auto-capitalization settings. I find that my System Preferences > Keyboard > Text settings on OS X, are automatically available to me when using Pages in IOS. So the "ii" to capital I works.

New to the Mac eh? Resist the temptation to install anti-virus, anti-malware, and any so-called Mac cleaning applications. I haven't and my Mac just purrs along nicely. Those that have done so, populate the Mac OS & System Software communities complaining of slow, unstable, and unbootable Macs. The underlined are simply unnecessary in OS X, as the operating system has built-in, regularly updated protections, and maintenance tools.

I would browse the following two books in order, at your nearest book store. Otherwise, start with the first one. Stepping stones.

    • David Pogue Books
      • Switching to the Mac: The Missing Manual, Yosemite Edition
      • OS X: The Missing Manual, Yosemite Edition

Thank you and I'm so glad you told me about anti-virus, anti-malware and Mac cleaning applications - I had been searching for such applications as had used in the past on old PC! Much appreciated. Stepping stones.... sound advice.... much appreciated.
