fan won't turn off

My fan suddenly started working loudly and won't turn off. I found the following error: 2fan/5/8:harddrive but don't know where to go from here. I've shut down, waited and restarted--doesn't help. Also shut down, unplugged and restarted--doesn't help. Anyone know what to do?

You could try restarting in single-user mode, holding the command and "S" keys down. When the screen comes up type "exit" (without the quotes) at the command line promp. Then press return.

This might do the trick.
