iBook (Yosemite) won't open or close. Message "Not Responding" pops up. Icon indicates that it is running.

I'm running Yosemite on my iMac. I tried to open iBooks; the icon appeared on the toolbar only. I tried to close the program and I received a "Not responding" pop up. I'd like to use it if it can be used. Otherwise, close it or get rid of it. Any ideas? Thanks

Force quit: Press ⌘ + option + esc, select iBooks, and press Force Quit. Then try opening it again.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.

Back up all data.

Quit iBooks if it's running. Test after taking each of the following steps that you haven't already taken. Stop when the problem is resolved. Quit iBooks again before going on to the next step.

Step 1

Hold down the option key and select Go Library from the Finder menu bar. From the Library folder, move the following item, if it exists, to the Trash:

Cookies/com.apple.ibooks.cookies

Step 2

Delete this item in the same way:

Preferences/com.apple.ibooks.plist

Step 3

Delete this item:

Containers/com.apple.iBooksX

and move this one to the Desktop:

Containers/com.apple.BKAgentService

Restart the computer. To log out and log back in is not enough—you must restart.

When you launch iBooks, you'll be prompted to reset the library. Confirm. The library will be empty. Rebuild it by downloading your purchases from the iBooks Store and importing any other content you added. You may find the added content in the folder named "com.apple.BKAgentService" that you moved to the Desktop.

Hi there,

I have a similar problem to the one described above. I can start ibooks and see the books in my library but once I want to open one the program stops responding. I have just updated to 10.10.2 this morning. Up until yesterday iBooks worked fine.

I tried the solution Linc Davis suggested, but I can't seem to be able to find the files he mentions.

Any idea how to solve the problem?

I had a similar problem to that described by Herboz. My iBooks app became nearly unusable..more than half the time I opened it, I would get that awful spinning wheel. The app remained in the "not responding" mode until I had to use the force quit option (Press ⌘ + option + esc). I followed the advice offered by Linc Davis, and that solved the problem. I had to re-download my books, but that was a small inconvenience to have access once again to the more than 100 books I have in my iBooks library.

Unfortunately, I believe I just created a bigger problem when I moved the Containers/com.apple.BKAgentService file to the trash, then emptied it. I am back to the original problem. I can open iBooks, but it becomes unresponsive within 20 seconds.

Any suggestions? (FYI: All the deleted files have been replaced in the appropriate folders within the Library.
