Resetting your Mac's SMC and NVRAM may help get it to recognize your new mic.

just spoke with support and yes our Rode SmartLavs should work.
But you need to make a little input/output change first

Sep 13, 2016 5:50 AM in response to paul999 ukby stefan.lt,Hi everybody ...
I had the same problem - i tried to connect a Rode TRRS SmartLav+ to my MacBook Pro ( 2014 ) - but it was not recognized as external mic.
I solved it this way ... ( use exactly this order )
- buy a Rode SC-6
- plug in your iphone headset at the Audio - Output - Port
- plug in your Rode TRRS / SmartLav+ at one of the Audio - Input - Mic -Ports
- and THEN ( not earlier ) plug in the SC-6 with the both cables into your MacBook Pro
Voilá.
Have fun ...
Stefan
